Sustainable polymers: recyclable, biodegradable and/or biobased?
Summary
This lecture provides an overview of sustainability in the context of polymer and coating technologies, reducing environmental impact through concepts such as recyclability, use of biobased resources, biodegradability, compostability, circular design, and carbon neutrality. The lecture also introduces Life Cycle Assessment as a way to evaluate the environmental footprint of materials from production to end-of-life. Different recycling technologies are briefly described, along with the role of biobased polymers and how their origin and processing influence sustainability. Finally, the lecture touches on biodegradable and compostable polymers.
Biography
Cristina Lavilla Aguilar holds a PhD in Polymer Chemistry from the Polytechnical University of Catalonia (Spain, 2013). Following roles at the DSM Materials Science Center in Geleen and at the Technical University of Eindhoven, she joined DSM Coating Resins (now Covestro) in 2017. Cristina is R&D Scientist at Covestro in Zwolle, in the R&D Polycondensation group, and she is focused on topics related to polymer materials and sustainability.
